Hana Yori Dango (Boys over Flowers) is a Japanese shoujo manga written and illustrated by Yoko Kamio. The story is set in Eitoku Academy, an elite school for children from rich families. It follows lead protagonist Tsukushi Makino, a student from a working-class family, and the members of Eitoku Academy's elite Flower Four, commonly known as the "F4".

Hana Yori Dango is also the best-selling shoujo manga in Japan of all time. It has spawned both anime and live-action series from different countries.

This blog is dedicated to anything Hana Yori Dango. Enjoy!

hana-yoridango sent: Omggg I know it's just a pilot ep (the american remake) but I was cringing most of the ep ; ___ ; (and I was actually supporting the remake) hopefully it only gets better!

Yeah, it definitely left a bad taste in my mouth :P I mean, I wouldn’t mind the low budget as long as they have a good script to go along with it (take Meteor Garden for example). But this one is just so wrong and messy! I can’t feel any ounce of the original characters at all. Maybe we should try treating it more as a loose adaptation?

dangermousie:

I think the reason I love Hanadan so much in almost every incarnation is that it takes the typical ‘strong-willed heroine transforms bad boy into a human being via love’ set-up (and I am quite fond of that set-up, I confess, however unrealistic I know it to be), and actually does so much more with it - Hanadan is basically about the slow and painful road for Domyouji to turn into a functional and worthwhile member of the human race - unlike a lot of romantic heroines who overlook the fact that their hero is a violent, arrogant mess, Makino will NOT take him until he transforms himself into someone who she can and should be with. And she doesn’t transform him, he transforms himself to be with her.

One of the things I loved so much about my ultimate romantic-kink scene of all time - where Domyouji’s enemy* kidnaps Makino and tells Domyouji that if he wants her unharmed, he has to stand there and basically let enemy’s goons beat him to death without fighting back - wasn’t even the fact that this shows that no-impulse-control, arrogant, violence-is-the-answer Domyouji is capable of standing there and not fighting back no matter what because he is capable of negating himself for Makino (and in the process experiences the helplessness his targets must have felt), or even the fact that he does it for her when they are not a couple and she told him to fuck off, but the fact that after all that, Makino does not jump into his arms. She is grateful and appreciative (and she shielded him with her own body, when she could, because she is fucking fierce), but she won’t confuse gratitude and love.

* I found the enemy set-up in manga/Meteor Garden better than in the jdrama, because in the manga/MG, it was Domyouji’s sins coming home to roost - someone who was related to a guy he had almost beaten up to death in some fight is exacting this vengeance, but either way I loved it, because Domyouji wronged Sakurako too, even if not as egregiously as he did Junpei. Plus, he way he holds onto her acar as a talisman - awww.

OK, I should start a proper rewatch and not just rewatch my fave bits :)

Currently watching it.

Initial thoughts:

  • I’m still bothered by Liam’s hair - though it’s pretty awesome that they’re kinda portraying him as a violent guy who likes fighting even though he doesn’t look scary enough.
  • I kinda don’t like how Piper is telling Zoey to “mind her own business” and just ignore the bullying. In the manga and majority of all versions, Yuki always says that she doesn’t like how Makino was “concealing her real self” and that she misses the times she used to protect her.
  • I’ll be blunt. I don’t like the way Makino’s character is written and I don’t like the main actress. She was playing more like herself rather than Makino’s. Good thing she was eventually replaced.
  • The cake scene and some other scenes that follow were really taken from the Korean version not that i mind it much
  • Oh, they introduced Junpei earlier in the show and he’s associated with Sakurako. Is his character merged with Thomas?
  • I hope they fix the lighting, pacing and sounds.
More thoughts later after I finish watching.

it took me only 5min to last…. its pretty terrible, the acting, the bg music, its really like a home-made video basically…

i want to cry after watching that. information was everywhere. i feel like they strayed from Makino’s character as a ‘strong weed’. i understand they want to give her friends, but i feel like even in HYD, her friends were always there for her when she was in a tough spot even though they weren’t always prevalent in the series. but that’s also because her family played a big role in support. Though really family support is different from friend support. I hated when zoey and her friends ‘bullied’ them back, but i guess if it’s to compensate it for makino’s punch then i guess, but again, that’s straying away from her character. it’s not FULLY embodying the makino character. The way they were giving out F4 notices; nope didn’t like that…idk…

.Production was terrible, sound and lighting was horrible. The acting was okay; it was annoying too. meh..let’s see if i will be watching it in the future. they ended episode one at my least and most hated part in the whole story of Hana Yori Dango and that’s the rape scene. T^T but thankfully rui was there to stop them lol. yeah..there’s my 2 cents. i really had high hopes for it, but i guess not.

I am actually trying my best to be at least tolerant with the “changes” cause it’s still one ep (not to mention a pilot one) - but yeah, this Makino was way OFF (should I even call her that?). If there’s something I really like about the heroine in the manga/J-drama/T-drama is how she yells all her built-up frustrations in the rooftop since she tries her very best not to stand out in the campus and live a quite/normal life (no matter how disgusted she was with the bullying). It was only until the F4 messed with her friend that she wasn’t able to control herself and retaliated against them (retaliation = coming back to school and treating the bullying as if it was nothing as much as she can). Makino has friends but she’s definitely not the kind who would depend nor encourage them to bully back (wtf?) How is she going to influence Domyouji and the rest of the F4 in how to be “normal” if she was written like this? Did they understand the point of HYD at all or are they only following the typical love triangle concept like the Korean BOF did?

Also, for some reason, I feel like re-watching the J-drama and T-drama once again after this haha :P But I’m still curious how the Dawn actress would portray Makino so I’m staying tuned.

kawaiibeela sent: i thought it seemed really low budget D: like as if it were a school project and someone was just like "hey do u wanna remake this japanese show?" and its as if they just filmed it at someones house/school. the acting is pretty bad too. im glad they changed the actress for makino lol its just so weird to see a remake of this show. i dont like how they made her friends too. yuki was more awesome in the japanese version. but i guess the 2nd half of the episode was better than the first? hmm....

I am judging it based on their script rather than the budget since it’s pretty fan-made anyway. Meteor Garden (the Taiwanese adaptation) has a budget of a school play and the acting is sub-par too but it’s still a lot more entertaining and better written since it follows the manga slavishly - it’s like the actors there were really playing the manga characters rather than themselves unlike here.

Anonymous sent: Omg yes that ghetto act of hers. I guess producers want her to be portrayed as "real" american girl but i dont think all american girls are like that. But i kinda get why they did it cuz Makino is a strong person inside. It's too early to tell about her characterization though. Oh and people might hate me for saying this but the american rui kinda gave me an Edward Cullen vibe which idk it's good or not. Haha!

Yeah, it’s actually giving me Step Up vibes (have you watched that?). Well, I think what makes Makino appealing is the fact that her strength is not measured physically but more on the emotional side. She was consistently emotionally strong in the manga - which is why the “weed” term fits her perfectly.

And hahaha, you think so? xD I am loving American Rui out of the four actually! - which is weird since Domyouji is my fave character + I have crushes in all his drama incarnations. I guess there’s something lacking or I’m just too bothered with the washington ponytail like everyone else! LOL.

Anonymous sent: Im a bit sceptical about boys before friends. But im really curious. I'm kinda bothered by everyone's hair in the trailer. And the idea that the main character is a dancer isnt so bad. I just hope she wont be only dancing hip hop like what they showed in the trailers. I want her to be a more diverse dancer thus proving why she got accepted to the school in the first place. So what are your hopes for the show?

I am only bothered by their Domyouji’s hair :P I think my biggest problem is the main actress in the trailer (she looks too old for the role; the “ghetto” act is kinda annoying; and the way she looks more intimidating and violent (?) than Domyouji rubs me wrong - which is a good thing she was replaced). I was actually planning to just wait for the re-shooting but since I’m curious as you, I’ll still be checking out the first ep with this girl as the lead.

And nope, I have no expectations. I’ve seen this story re-done a lot of times that I’ve become tolerant with any adaptations that come its way ;)

Boys Before Friends Cast Introduction

Idk about you guys but I am kinda liking their Rui!

(Also, there’s a typo: That’s Claude, not Riley - but then again, they’re gonna replace her with another actress so yeah…)

Boys Before Friends Longer Trailer

Like I said in the previous posts, they will be changing their Makino in the 2nd ep and will re-shoot eps 1-2 next year with the new actress. What are your first impressions so far?

Aw, they all waited for four hours—but why is it that Domyouji is the one I want to hug the most? D:
